Computer Hung On You? Freeze On You?
April 5, 2008
WHOA! What happened to your computer? For a moment, it was working perfectly fine, and now, it’s all… frozen! If only you knew the reason behind that. Why does your computer decide to freeze up on you anyways? It doesn’t like you? Yeah, treat your computer nicely, and it will decide whether you deserve the respect back. There is a way to treat your computer nicely, or in other words, keep it “healthy.” That way, your computer will not “misbehave.”
Before we begin, I will mention that it is common for computers to freeze once in a while. Normally, you have to restart the computer in order for it to function again after the freeze. It is also normal for you to lose data after you restart it, so it is suggested that you save all your files after several minutes of work. Try saving your files on USB Drives/Flashdrives as a back-up in case your computer gets damaged.
Now, let’s get back to business. Why does your computer freeze?
Here are some reasons your computer freezes, and you can actually see what went wrong on your screen:
- You have too many browsers open (perhaps over 5)
- There are too many tabs open in one browser
- The page is still running, and you are clicking on other links
- Oversized pictures/photos that do not fit on your computer screen
Here are some more reasons, and you usually cannot “see” these until you get a technician to take a look:
- Your computer could possibly be performing another function at the same time that you are unaware of
- Some programs have bugs that can cause freezing
- The order of the software components in your computer are saved into memory at startup each day
- You have mismatched hardware
- An error in a Driver (Drivers are objects such as components of Video Cards, modems, etc.)
In order to prevent this, you should:
- Get the most updated hardware if you can
- Try not to open several browsers/tabs at once
- Have a technician annually check your computer in case of new problems
- Press the Escape (Esc) key so you can go back to the previous page, and start navigating again from there (this is only if your computer has already frozen)
- Make sure everything is connected to your computer (check all those wires down there!)
- Check for viruses and unwanted spyware
Computer glitches are very common, so remember that it is okay for it to freeze once in a while. However, if your computer is freezing every day, there is definitely something that is out-of-order. Have a technician check your computer for anything odd, and be sure you are taking all safety precautions at all times!
